Course Description
Vision and Motor Development examines the close relationship between primitive reflexes, motor development and the development of the visual process. Building on Goldstein’s understanding of nervous system development through meaningful experience, the course explores how early reflex responses provide the foundations for increasingly sophisticated, efficient and automatic movement patterns.
Participants study the development and function of key primitive reflexes, including the Tonic Labyrinthine, Asymmetrical Tonic Neck, Symmetrical Tonic Neck, Spinal Galant, Moro, Fear Paralysis and Palmar reflexes. Particular attention is given to the movement learning that follows each reflex response and the potential consequences when this learning is incomplete.
Participants develop practical skill in reflex assessment, observation of movement, and identification of developmental adaptations, with the introduction of vision therapy activities designed to develop the visual process, including posture, movement, balance, coordination, spatial awareness, oculomotor skills and complex movement patterns.
Also, there will be discussions on the testing and vision therapy for children aged 6 months - 5 years, including techniques to try to assess reflex responses on wriggly children that won’t stay still, together with VT activities for child development. This approach to VT can also be used for some patients with ASD.
More than half of the course is practical floor work in pairs. Attendees should wear comfortable, loose clothing for floor work, and bring a cushion.
