the retinoscope

getting started with using the retinoscope

This was a command performance done for new optometrists who just joined the office of Nancy Torgerson in Washington State. This ZOOM seminar was recorded August 24, 2021 and thanks to the attendees for their permission to share this seminar.

Caroline Hurst talks about one of the most critical learnings that took place during the OPSIS Advanced Learning Through Vision course which took place in 2023 in South Africa, and that is the significance of near point retinoscopy.

Here Dr. Harris and Dr. Steele show at first a very early attempt at video recording retinoscopy. The first section shows that sudden brightening that has been described by many when looking at a reflex of a person intently attending to a target. Then Dr. Harris demonstrates the stress point retinoscopy technique.

Here Dr. Harris walks through steps that can help you learn the Stress Point retinoscopy technique. By going through these early steps and practicing this way, when you are ready to begin using the technique with your patients you will have more confidence in your findings.

Here we rotate a cylinder lens in a spot scope reflex to show the "banding" effect of an astigmatic lens. The rotations help see where the axis is.
